How do I look after my scar?

One of the most common concerns post-surgery or after a minor injury is how to manage scars effectively. These reminders of the procedure or injury can cause discomfort and self-consciousness for many of my patients. Fortunately, there are several strategies available to promote healing and minimize the visibility of scars. In this brief video we'll explore some practical tips for managing scars after skin surgery, many of these tips also apply to minor wounds sustained without surgery.

  1. Follow Post-Procedure Instructions: You will receive on the day of your procedure specific instructions for post-surgery care. Following these guidelines diligently is crucial for optimal healing. This may include keeping the area clean, avoiding excessive movement or pressure, and using prescribed medications or dressings.

  2. Protect from Sun Exposure: UV rays can worsen the appearance of scars, causing them to become darker and more noticeable. Protect the scarred area from sun exposure by covering it with clothing or using a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher.

  3. Massage the Scar Tissue: Gently massaging the scar tissue can help break down collagen fibers and improve blood circulation to the area, promoting faster healing and reducing scar visibility. Use a silicone-based gel or cream while massaging for added benefits.

  4. Consider Scar Treatment Options: If you're dissatisfied with the appearance of your scar or if it's causing discomfort or restricted movement, consult with your healthcare provider about available scar treatment options. These may include silicone sheets or gels, corticosteroid injections, laser therapy, or surgical revision.

  5. Be Patient and Persistent: Scar healing is a gradual process that can take months to years, depending on the individual and the severity of the scar. Be patient with your body and consistent with your scar management routine for the best results.

Managing scars after minor skin surgery requires patience, diligence, and a proactive approach to care. By following these tips and staying in touch with your doctor, you can help promote optimal healing and minimize the visibility of scars, allowing you to feel more confident and comfortable in your skin. Remember, each scar tells a unique story of resilience and healing, and with proper care, you can ensure that yours fades into the background of your journey toward wellness.
